If NFPA 13D is a lesser degree of protection then NFPA 13R why isn't the shadowing allowance of 13R carried into the 13D standard? It seems that it should apply to both standards. In my opinion this is an acceptable carry over from 13R to 13D. This section 6.7.7.1.5.7 (13R) allows for shadowing in compartments up to 800 sq ft to occur so long as three conditions are meet:
1) maximum area of individual shadow does not exceed 3 sq ft.
2) maximum area of all shadow areas within the compartment don't exceed 12 sq ft.
3) maximum area of all shadows do not exceed 30 sq ft per dwelling.
Therefore, it seems logical and applicable to apply this criteria to a 13D system.
But, it would be a good idea to check with your AHJ first to make sure he/she is in agreement.
